Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

Is there actually anything better than enjoying an ice cream sundae on a warm summer night after a delicious dinner? Yes, there is. It’s an ice cream sundae made with homemade vanilla ice cream!

The Best KitchenAid Attachment – The Ice Cream Maker

Gone are the days of shaking the ingredients with ice cream salt if you have a KitchenAid Mixer with the ice cream attachment. In the past, this attachment didn’t always get the best reviews, but let me tell you, KitchenAid has revamped it and it is a must-have in my household!

The attachment runs around $80 through their site, but can often be found on sale for around $65 through Bed Bath and Beyond or Williams Sonoma. Keep in mind you need to plan when you are going to use the attachment. I recommend freezing at least 24 hours before you plan to make ice cream for the best results.

How does the magic happen?

After you freeze your attachment for 24 hours, attach it to your mixer according to the instructions and get to work. Pour in the heavy cream, half and half, sweetened condensed milk and a little vanilla extract and let the mixer run for 45 minutes. That’s it! No shaking or stirring required and you’ll end up with the creamiest, most delicious tasting vanilla ice cream ever.

What next after making your ice cream?

It gets a little messy trying to get every last drop of ice cream out of the attachment, but I won’t judge if you lick the mixing tool! For best results, store it in a double-insulated ice cream container. When I first started making ice cream, I stored it in a glass Pyrex container, but the double-insulated container really makes a difference when scooping the ice cream. I use this option I found on Amazon and it works perfectly size wise too.

Plain vanilla not your thing?

Don’t be shy on adding mix-ins to your ice cream! Vanilla is my favorite, but I fold for some cookies & cream every now and then. Add crushed Oreos, mini M&Ms, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips and graham cracker crumbs, anything! You cannot go wrong with adding crushed candies or cookies to this vanilla ice cream base. Word from the wise – stir in the candies or cookies in a new bowl because this recipe ends up overflowing some in the attachment.
