Refreshing Garden Salsa

Making your own salsa is MUCH easier than you think! Put all the ingredients in a blender or food processor, blend and enjoy.

Fresh Ingredients or Canned?

For the tomato base, I recommend using either a can of tomato sauce or 3 medium-sized tomatoes. If you are using fresh tomatoes, cut them in half and give them a gentle squeeze before you blend or put in the food processor. They are a little more watery than tomato sauce so your salsa would be more watery than desired.

For the jalapeño, cilantro and onion, you have to use fresh. These fresh ingredients make a very drastic difference compared to using dried cilantro or onion powder for example.

As far as the lime juice, feel free to use a fresh lime or the juice from the little green plastic bottle you purchase in the produce section. I’ve used both and honestly, don’t taste too much of a difference in the flavor.

Make it Spicy!

Are you a fan of hot salsa or are you more of a mild type person? Either way, you get to control the level of heat for this salsa!

If you’re more of a fan of heat, add a second jalapeño or if you dare, leave the seeds in for the jalapeño(s).

One thing to note – you can always add more spicy stuff, but you can’t always remove it. If you’re unsure about your level of spice, start with a seedless jalapeño, blend it all together and try a taste. If you want more of a kick, throw in the seeds or another jalapeño.

Ingredients

  • 1 can of tomato sauce or 3 medium-sized tomatoes
  • 1 small red onion or half of a large red onion
  • 1 jalapeño – remove seeds if you want more mild flavor
  • Handful of cilantro – about ¼ c
  • 1 tbsp of lime juice or half a lime worth of juice
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  • Put all ingredients in a blender or food processor and blend until all ingredients are well-mixed.
  • Serve immediately with your favorite tortilla chips or refrigerate in an airtight container. Best if enjoyed within 1-3 days of making.
