Crispy French Toast Sticks

The only thing that could make French toast better is by making it a little crispier on the edges! Mix up your weekend French toast with these Crispy French Toast Sticks. They are perfect for kids or just for yourself!

What Makes Them Different from Regular French Toast?

Don’t get me wrong, regular French toast is one of my favorite things to eat for breakfast, but I love mixing it up every now and then with a batch of Crispy French Toast Sticks.

It does take just slightly longer to make compared to regular French toast, BUT the taste is vastly different and isn’t it more fun to have things bite-sized?

After you mix up your egg and milk wash and cook your bread in the skillet, you will use a pizza cutter (or knife) to cut your bread slices into 3-4 strips. Heat a thin layer of oil in the skillet you used to cook the French toast and place your strips in there. Let it sit for about a minute on one side before flipping and repeating the process.

Remove from the oiled pan and dab with a paper towel (or don’t, I’m not judging!). Sprinkle with a little powdered sugar and dip in syrup for an elevated French toast morning experience!

Healthier Alternatives or Substitutions

Not into dairy milk? No problem! Using almond milk or oat milk works perfectly.

Another way to cut some calories in this meal (or add some nutrients) is to use bread that’s a little better for you than your regular old sliced white bread. I love using Dave’s Killer Bread. You won’t save much on calories, but there is almost 20% of your daily fiber intake in just one piece. Also, there’s no added sugar in their bread.

Though it is a little more costly, I purchase it at Costco and find it’s worth the additional price. Also, it tends to fill me up more for the day compared to eating white or wheat bread brands such as Sara Lee or Wonder Bread.

Prefer some additional flavor? Add a dash of cinnamon to your egg wash!

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 c milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 6 slices of bread
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Note – For every egg and half cup of milk, you will yield about 3 pieces of French toast.

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet on the stove top over medium heat.
  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and vanilla.
  • Add butter to skillet and coat evenly.
  • Dip each side of the bread slices in the egg wash and place in heated/buttered skillet.
  • Using a spatula, flip French toast after 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove from heat.
  • Once all your bread is cooked, add the oil to your skillet and leave the heat on.
  • Using a pizza wheel, cut each piece of bread into 3-4 strips.
  • Add French toast strips to heated oil and flip after about a minute.
  • Remove from heat and dab additional grease off with a paper towel.
  • Serve with warmed syrup and enjoy!
