Thick & Meaty Sausage Gravy

Who needs store bought Bob Evans gravy that comes out like lunch lady slop when heated up when you can have homemade Thick & Meaty Sausage Gravy in about 15 minutes?

Homemade is Always Better!

I firmly believe that unless you’re eating McDonald’s french fries, making something at home is going to be better than getting it at a restaurant or purchasing it from the grocery store already made.

Sausage gravy is no exception. Those boxed premade mixes are loaded with extra preservatives and honestly don’t fill you up. They’re not very thick and are more of a flavor addition as opposed to a filling breakfast on a weekend morning.

Spend the 20 minutes making this recipe and wow your family the next time you make breakfast. They will absolutely love it and ask for it again and again!

You can thank me when your husband tells you your sausage gravy is better next time you’re out to eat at Bob Evans and that’s what he orders (speaking from real experience of course!).

What to Pair with Thick & Meaty Sausage Gravy

The traditional food to serve with sausage gravy in our house is biscuits. If you’re feeling extra adventurous one weekend morning, I cannot recommend this buttermilk biscuit recipe enough from Sally’s Baking Addiction. If you’re short on time or just don’t feel like making homemade biscuits though, your favorite can of Pillsbury biscuits works just as well.

Other options to consider serving with your sausage gravy include hash browns, home fries, eggs or just in a bowl by itself because let’s be real, it’s that tasty!

Additions & Substitutions

We love kicking things up a notch in my house spice-wise and this recipe is no exception. I always use the hot ground sausage and add extra crushed red pepper.

Running short on milk or dairy free? Feel free to use almond milk or another milk alternative in this recipe. With using a dairy-free alternative, you may have to add a little more flour than the recipe requires in order to thicken the gravy. Slowly add flower and stir over heat.

Turkey sausage works well in this recipe too if you do not eat pork or want a slightly less fatty meat option.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground sausage
  • 1 c milk
  • ¼ c flour

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground sausage until there is no pink remaining.
  • Drain the grease.
  • Return the skillet to the stove top and turn down the heat to medium low. Add in the milk and flour and stir.
  • Stir constantly until the texture starts to thicken, this takes about 5 minutes. If you prefer more runny sausage gravy, remove from the heat sooner. If you prefer thicker sausage gravy, continue adding flour a teaspoon at a time until desired thickness is achieved.
  • Remove from heat once gravy is thickened and serve with your favorite breakfast carbs!
