Why are drinks in the summer so much more refreshing and tasty? Whether it’s sparking water as your mid-day pick-me-up, orange juice on a weekend morning, hard seltzer at a summer picnic or a revitalizing smoothie on the go, chilled drinks in the summer are just so much more enjoyable. These summer smoothies are no exception and take hardly any time to make.

This past weekend I met up with a small group at a local coffee shop to discuss our tips and tricks for eating nutritiously. The group ranged from different ages and had varying degrees of what “eating well” meant to them. For me, it’s all about balance…meals should be made with mainly whole ingredients and relatively quick to make. For others in the group, some struggled with having discipline to eat well all day while others strive to incorporate planning ahead in their routine.

If you’re one to battle with avoiding sweets, a smoothie is a perfect alternative to satisfy that sweet tooth. With a little extra effort, you can plan these ingredients ahead of time and freeze in quart sized bags. This way you can throw them in the blender with a little ice and your favorite liquid base and be on the go in no time. Don’t be shy on adding some spinach or kale too for some extra nutrients without compromising the taste.

Mix and match with seasonal fruits and with your liquid base. Milk, nut based milks, sugar-free juices and water all make great options for a liquid base. I like smoothies to be thinner so I can enjoy through a straw, but Greek yogurt can be a great alternative for a base as well for a more protein-packed drink.
